A building at Honeysuckle was evacuated on Wednesday morning after shaking from an earthquake in Victoria.
The magnitude 5.9 earthquake centred in the regional Victorian town of Mansfield, but the effect was felt far and wide.
Houses in Melbourne shook and movement could be felt at Canberra's Parliament House and Sydney's CBD.
Newcastle residents have reported feeling the quake.
Staff at the McDonald Jones Homes office on Honeysuckle Drive felt the building shake just after 9am.
McDonald Jones staff member Brett Lavaring was in the building at the time and said the experience was "surreal".
"We felt the building move," he said. "It felt like it was significant."
He said about 30 or 40 staff members were in the building at the time, and quickly evacuated out to a safe place where staff from the nearby Hit 106.9 and Triple M radio stations were already gathering.
Mr Lavaring pointed out the building is in line with the old Newcastle Workers Club, which was the site of the most damage in the 1989 Newcastle Earthquake.
He said the building manager conducted a walk through of the building before staff were cleared to return.
