Building collapses in Helensburgh as heavy rain and winds batter Scotland

A building has collapsed in Helensburgh as heavy rain and winds continue to batter large parts of Scotland.

Argyll and Bute Council confirmed the structured collapse of the building on the A814 East Clyde Street between Sinclair Street and Maitland Street junctions at around 6.50am this morning.

Nearby roads have been closed off and diversions have been put in place.

Posting on Facebook, the council wrote: "Road closure - Helensburgh.

"A building has collapsed on the A814 East Clyde Street between Sinclair Street and Maitland Street junctions.

The road is closed at this section. Diversion route: East Clyde Street - Maitland Street - East Princess Street - Sinclair Street."

It's not believed that anyone was hurt in the incident.

The alarming incident comes after The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for much of the south and west of the country today.

Very strong winds and heavy rain have been forecast for:

  • The Highlands
  • Argyll and Bute
  • East Ayrshire
  • East Dunbartonshire
  • East Renfrewshire
  • Glasgow
  • Inverclyde
  • North Ayrshire
  • Renfrewshire
  • South Ayrshire
  • West Dunbartonshire

Scots have been told to expect travel disruptions and floodings.

The Scottish Enviroment Protection Agency (SEPA) has also issued 16 local flood warnings and 12 regional flood alerts for today and tomorrow.

Mark Franklin, SEPA’s Flood Duty Manager, said: “Heavy rain and strong winds are expected across much of Scotland on Saturday and Sunday.

"Flooding impacts from rivers and surface water are possible across much of the south west and west of Scotland, including Argyll, much of central Scotland and extending across Tayside into Angus and Aberdeenshire.

"Impacts may include flooding of land and roads, disruption to travel and difficult driving conditions.

“There may also be disruption from spray and waves overtopping today along the Solway coast, west coast, the Caithness, Sutherland and Moray coastlines and around the Orkney and Shetland Islands.

“Flood alerts have been issued and people living, working and travelling in affected areas are advised to take extra care.

“SEPA is working 24/7 to monitor rainfall and river levels, and is in close contact with the Met Office and other partners to review the forecasts, which are combined with local expertise from all regions of Scotland to understand and present the flooding risk.
