Building a short list of trade up draft targets for Miami

Considering the mentality of the 2019 Miami Dolphins, it is hard to envision the team getting too aggressive in the 1st-round of the 2019 NFL Draft. This team wants to add picks, not squander them or trade them away. But general manager Chris Grier would be wise to keep his options open — just in case.

Who are some 2019 NFL Draft prospects that the Dolphins could consider breaking their mentality for?

Trade up candidates

QB Kyler Murray, Oklahoma

Murray is the obvious answer. If the team decides they want the top quarterback in the 2019 Draft, they’ll have to pay extra for him. National pundits are no longer 100% locked in on Murray going #1 overall, although he is still considered the favorite. If he doesn’t go to Arizona, chaos will ensue. Perhaps the Dolphins would be willing to end a mini-slide.

DL Quinnen Williams, Alabama

If Quinnen doesn’t go #1 and the Jets and Raiders pass on him, the Dolphins should pick up the phone and at least do their due diligence. Williams is the best player in the draft and if positional needs cause him to slide, Miami would be wise to be aggressive.

OLB Josh Allen, Kentucky

The Dolphins have preached versatility — defenders in this year’s class don’t get much more versatile than Josh Allen. Allen can play off the ball, in pass coverage and coming off the edge as a pass rusher. His worst case scenario is a role like that we’ve seen from Minnesota’s Anthony Barr, who was considered a pass rusher out of UCLA. But here in Miami, Allen could be used all over the place and give the Dolphins the scheme diversity they covet.
