Builders issue apology after putting a portaloo next to a Cambuslang war memorial

Bungling builders have apologised after they placed a portaloo next to a war memorial in Cambuslang.

The “disrespectful” positioning of the cabin by Dundas Homes was spotted by Drumsagard residents last week, just as the country prepared to mark Remembrance Day.

South Lanarkshire Council had given the company permission to use the Gilbertfield Road site.

However, workers unwittingly placed the cabin very close to the commemorative cairn there.

A disgruntled resident told the Reformer : “We saw it there last Monday.

“It seemed so disrespectful at this time of year. Someone obviously didn’t think or didn’t notice what was already there. The land is owned by the council’s housing department, so they should have said something.”

Glenn Jamieson, of the 217th Gilbertfield Boy’s Brigade, said: “It was a bad place to put it. I’m sure they could have found somewhere else.”

Once Dundas were alerted to the problem, they moved the portacabin last Wednesday morning, Remembrance Day.

A spokeswoman for Dundas Estates, said: “We were made aware by a few people in the local community that a temporary toilet facility was situated near to the war memorial on Gilbertfield Road.

“We would firstly like to apologise to those who were left upset by this as we understand it perceives a lack of sensitivity, something we would never wish to convey.

“In this case we worked with our supplier on site that required and set up the facility and in learning of its position, acted immediately to move the structure away from the memorial as quickly as possible.

“Dundas is a responsible developer, and we value all aspects of our local communities greatly. We would like to thank those people who brought this to our attention.”

The commemorative cairn at Gilbertfield Roas has had other problems with Dundas in the past.

The Reformer has previously told how some locals were left frustrated at the mess left by the home builder when vehicles travelled along the site, while regular flooding on the road has been another issue.

The cairn was unveiled in 2013. It is in honour of the many soldiers who marched down Gilbertfield Road toward Newton Train Station before they headed for the front.
