Builders in hospital after wall collapses 'on top of them'

A block of flats has been evacuated after an internal wall collapsed during building work injuring two contractors who were taken to hospital.

The emergency services were called out to a building on Albert Road in Southport today ( Saturday) just after 3pm following reports of an incident.

A spokesman for the fire service told the ECHO that an internal wall collapsed during conversion work. Fire crews arrived at the scene at around 3.11pm.

Two contractors who were working in the building suffered 'minor injuries' and were taken to hospital by ambulance.

The spokesman said that the building and car park had now been evacuated. A structural engineer is expected to carry out an inspection of the building later today.

Fire crews and police are still at the scene.

The ECHO understands there are six flats in the building.

A local man said: "I heard that a wall collapsed and came down on top of two builders. I saw them going into the ambulance. I was told the builders were working on a basement flat when the wall came down.

"I think they have evacuated the building to be safe rather than sorry later."

Police have closed roads in the area. The force posted a comment on social media which read: "Please be aware of a current road closures in Southport, Albert Road/Gordon St and Alexander Rd are closed due to an incident. Please find an alternative route."

A spokesman for the fire service confirmed a cordon was in place and that crews were still at the scene.
