A spokesperson told the Newcastle Herald on Monday initial inquiries suggested "a build-up of gas inside the car and an electrical source of ignition" caused the explosion.

Residents of Quinalup and Imga streets were evacuated as the authorities set up a 200 metre exclusion zone in the aftermath of the explosion.
