The belief of investigators is solidifying that a fatal car explosion at Gwandalan on Fathers' Day was caused by a gas leak.

Emergency crews tried to save Mr Bull, after neighbours pulled him away from the blast site, but he died at the scene.

He had suffered serious burns, police said.

The explosion was reportedly felt across neighbouring suburbs.

Police said on Monday the blast was not suspicious - it was an accident involving a suspected leak from a gas cylinder.

Fire and Rescue NSW was investigating the cause of the incident.

A spokesperson told the Newcastle Herald on Monday initial inquiries suggested "a build-up of gas inside the car and an electrical source of ignition" caused the explosion.

The Herald reported on Sunday that a highly-flammable oxy acetylene cylinder - commonly used by tradespeople - was believed to have ignited the car and a nearby building.

Residents of Quinalup and Imga streets were evacuated as the authorities set up a 200 metre exclusion zone in the aftermath of the explosion.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said on Sunday morning the incident could be described as a "freak accident".
