Build 750,000 homes on public land to ease housing crisis, says businessman

A businessman believes he can solve the housing crisis by building 750,000 homes on under-used public land.

Hugh Dennis wants to help ease the chronic shortage of accommodation through his not-for-profit vehicle, Little Ships.

He said the plan would “help boost a local economy by employing local small and medium enterprises to build these new homes, including builders, suppliers and professionals”.

Mr Dennis added: “On sites we control, we will build the percentage of affordable homes required by a local authority as a minimum.

“We will not build on the countryside, we will be green and factory-built when possible for the least impact and best quality.”

The average developments would include just 10 homes, meaning they would be unprofitable for bigger house builders

All cash generated would be pumped back into more projects, Mr Dennis insisted.
