Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon reveals what he would do differently if making the show today

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon has revealed the big change he would make if working on the show today.

Whedon, who led the show for all seven seasons, said the difference would relate to the sexuality of Alyson Hannigan’s character Willow Rosenberg.

Throughout the course of the teen vampire series, Willow’s sexuality changes – in the early seasons, she is attracted to men, but in the fourth season, she falls in love with Tara (Amber Benson), who later becomes her girlfriend.

Speaking to Metro, Whedon said: “There are you things you can’t do, thanks to [the society at the time].”

“It [was] like, ‘OK, you can’t make Willow bi, you can’t say this is a phase, because that’s what people do to deny their existence.’

”So, if I did it now, I’d be like, ‘Yes, she can be bi, because some people are! But back then it was like, no… we’re not ready for that.”

Whedon decided to make Willow and Tara’s relationship romantic due to the on-screen chemistry of the actors.

He once said he considers their first kiss, which occurs in season four episode “Hush”, one of the “most romantic images” featured in the series.

In April it was revealed that Dolly Parton secretly produced the long-running fantasy series.
