A protective buffalo saves its calf from the clutches of death after a lioness pounced on the helpless animal.
The buffalo herd had gathered at a mud hole in Botswana, southern Africa, to drink — but they were being watched.
And when a hunting pack of lionesses launched their attack, a battle of epic proportions began.
While the calf and older buffalo escaped unscathed, photographer and vet Ben Cranke, said: “The lioness didn’t leave without putting up a fight.
“The entire experience was harrowing but exhilarating.”
