Buffalo Bills star Von Miller needs surgery but did not tear ACL against Detroit Lions

An update has been issued on Buffalo Bills star Von Miller, after he was carted off in the second period against the Detroit Lions on Thursday.

Miller fell down after colliding with Lions centre Frank Ragnow, when attempting to sack Jared Goff towards the end of the first half. Fans started to fear the worst as he was carted off the field with a knee injury, and the Bills confirmed he would undergo an MRI scan on Friday.

The results have revealed that Miller did not tear his ACL - which was the initial concern despite the Bills diagnosing him with just a knee sprain. But Miller will require surgery, whether that's during the current campaign, or after the season is over.

Although a diagnosis for a potential ACL issue has come back negative, there is concern about his lateral meniscus. For now, Miller will be out of action for at least a week, potentially extending to 10 days, or more.

However, the knee of concern is the same one that Miller injured in 2013, when he did tear his ACL. Recurring knee injuries are of course extremely serious, and the Bills will be sweating over his short-term future.

The 33-year-old has been a huge part of the Bills defence this season, after arriving from Los Angeles Rams. The defenceman has already completed eight sacks this season, and has been a huge member of the side that's tipped to go far in the play-offs.

Miller is a reigning Super Bowl Champion, as he only joined the Bills from the Rams at the end of last season. His experience has been imperative to the successful Bills defence, although they've been more exposed in recent weeks.

The eight-time Pro-Bowler was only just recently discussing his happiness at the Bills, commenting about how good he's feeling in Buffalo. "I enjoy being here. I enjoy winning," Miller said.

"And that's what it's all about for me. I'm all about trying to get the most out of my teammates, trying to get them in a positive mindset, trying to uplift everybody and have everybody ready for Thursday or Sunday or whatever it may be."

The Bills moved to 8-3 on Thursday, as they didn't allow the injury to Miller to affect them too much. They beat the Lions 28-25, in a tight contest in Detroit.

The New England Patriots are up next for the Bills, and their next three games are all divisional as the regular season begins to draw to a close. Miller could be a huge loss, especially at this point in the season, but they're still stacked with talent.
