Nearly 20 years since Buena Vista Social Club’s eponymous album became an unlikely globe-straddling, Grammy award-winning success story, their new material is finally ready for release. Featuring previously unheard music by the eclectic Cuban musicians, Lost and Found is led by the new track, Macusa.
Recorded at the original sessions in Havana with producer Ry Cooder, the new album features live and studio tracks recorded by the original musicians Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Cachaíto López, Guajiro Mirabal, Eliades Ochoa, Omara Portuondo, and Compay Segundo.
“Over the years, we were often asked what unreleased material was left in the vaults,” says producer and BVSC label boss Nick Gold. “We knew of some gems, favourites amongst the musicians, but we were always too busy working on the next project to go back and see what else we had. When we eventually found the time, we were astonished at how much wonderful music there was.”
Ahead of the album’s release on 23 March, the first sample of this unearthed material can be heard below. Take a listen and let us know what you make of it.
