Budget supermarket owned by B&M planning to open in Townhill

The owners of discount retailer B&M have submitted new plans for a store in Townhill.

Heron Foods Ltd wants to build an "express supermarket" on the site of the former Bryn Nursery School in Townhill Road.

It had applied for permission on the same site in June, but it was turned down by planners.

The new application positions the entrance of the store toward the back of the site by Tower Gardens, rather than on the Townhill Road front.

The application also features car parking for 16 vehicles along with cycle parking facilities.

Since its closure back in 2005, there have been many talks about what will happen to the site of the former Bryn Nursery, including talks of a 58 bed care home.

Heron Foods currently has more than 250 branches across the UK, most of which are in the north of England the Midlands. It sells a wide range of value food products including frozen, chilled foods, as well as some big brands including McCains, Muller and Bird's Eye.

Having been bought out by B&M back in 2017, many of the newer branches trade under the name B&M Express.

In a planning statement Heron Foods said the application represents "the first phase of an opportunity to regenerate a presently vacant and unsightly brownfield site and provide a new retail facility to support the Graiglwyd Square local centre."
