Budget supermarket giant Aldi aiming to build new stores in Dumbarton and Helensburgh

Supermarket giant Aldi has revealed that it’s aiming to open 20 new stores across Scotland - including in Dumbarton and Helensburgh.

The budget chain, which currently has 96 stores in Scotland and 900 across the UK, is looking for suitable sites for new stores - with Dumbarton and Helensburgh targeted as potential locations, on a list that also includes Bishopbriggs, Clarkston and Dunblane.

Aldi are on the lookout for sites either in town centres or on the edge of towns for their development, with each site ideally being around 1.5 acres and on a main road with space for a 20,000sq ft store and 100 parking spaces.

The supermarket already has a branch in Alexandria.

Ciaran Aldridge, national property director at Aldi UK, said: “We have been investing in Britain for more than 30 years now, but we know that there are still areas that either do not have an Aldi at all, or that need another store to meet customer demand.

“Shoppers are increasingly looking to get unbeatable prices on their weekly shop without compromising on quality. That’s why, more so than ever, we’re keen to explore all opportunities to open new stores across the country.”

If Aldi push forward with the Helensburgh development it would become the town’s second new supermarket, with Morrisons taking over the former Waitrose store on Cardross Road last year.
