Budget date confirmed - as well as when we'll hear about the new Covid-19 support plan

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has confirmed when the Budget will be given - Wednesday, 3 March, 2021.

That will also be when he sets out the next stages of his coronavius support plan.

"The Budget will take place on 3 March 2021 and will deliver the next phase of our plan to support our recovery from coronavirus and protect jobs," Sunak Tweeted.

The Treasury confirmed the date, adding: "The Budget will set out the next phase of the plan to tackle the virus and protect jobs and will be published alongside the latest forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR)."

The date marks almost exactly a year since Sunak gave his first Budget, on March 11 this year, but comes after the planned autumn statement was replaced with a spending review.

The switch from a full Budget to a spending review meant, while statements about Government debt were included, there was no update on taxes.

Generally the Budget lays out things including new tax rates, pension payments, minimum wage and more.

However, this was left to be confirmed piecemeal in announcements by various ministers in the days and weeks that followed the spending review.

The timing of the speech is key - coming three months after the end of the post-Brexit transition period and a few weeks before a string of coronavirus support measures run out.

These include interventions such as the Stamp Duty holiday and the £20 boost to universal credit.

It will be hoped, too, that with people now being inoculated against coronavirus and the initial shock of the Brexit transition waning, the economy will be on the mend - allowing the Chancellor to set out a plan for Britain in the months and years ahead.

The Chancellor also announced today that the furlough and business support loan schemes - set to run out on March 31 - would be extended by a month to the end of April.

Sunak, said: “Our package of support for businesses and workers continues to be one of the most generous and effective in the world – helping our economy to recover and protecting livelihoods across the country.

“We know the premium businesses place on certainty, so it is right that we enable them to plan ahead regardless of the path the virus takes, which is why we’re providing certainty and clarity by extending this support, as well as implementing our Plan for Jobs.”
