Budget airline WOW Air which used to run cheap flights from Bristol to US goes bust leaving thousands stranded

A budget airline, once hailed for making low budget travel between Bristol and the USA possible, has collapsed.

WOW Air ran flight routes to a number of US cities, via a short stopover in Iceland, but axed the routes after just two summers.

The Icelandic airline has now fallen into administration leaving passengers across Europe stranded.

The company’s website states: “Wow Air has ceased operation. All Wow Air flights have been cancelled.”

Passengers are being advised to check available flights with other airlines.

Wow Air said some airlines may offer flights at a reduced rate, which are known as so-called rescue fares, in light of the circumstances.

It said it will be publishing information on those airlines when it becomes available.

How to save money on booking flights

Wow Air launched its Bristol to Reykjavik service in 2015, offering cheap flights to cities including San Francisco and Boston.

But the airline struggled to make the route profitable, according to the UK Aviation Network, and the airline ceased flying from Bristol 18 months ago.

However, Bristol travellers can still fly to Reykjavik, in Iceland, from Bristol Airport on easyJet.

TUI also added a flight to Iceland from Bristol Airport in November 2018.

A number of airlines have run into trouble in recent months, including Flybe which was taken over for a one penny share.
