Budget 24-hour gym to open in historic former garage in the west end

A budget gym is set to open in the A-listed Botanics garage in Hillhead.

The Gym Group's new 24-hour fitness hub will be spread across two floors above Nando's in the iconic Art Deco building – with bosses hoping to launch in early December.

There will be free weights, plate-loaded machines and cardio along with a range of free classes and one-to-one coaching, according to general manager Scott McKenzie.

He tells Glasgow Live:  "We've had the lease for five years, but it's been difficult because it's a listed building. It took ages to get through everything with the council. But now it's finally happening!"

With its distinctive green and white tiled facade, the Vinicombe Street garage is widely regarded as an architectural gem. Created between 1906 and 1912, it is thought to be the oldest example of a public car park in Scotland.

There has been widespread interest in the grade A-listed garage since it closed in 2007, as locals repeatedly called to bring it back into use.

However, the news that the former Botanics Garage would be turned into a Nando's last year left a bad taste in many west enders' mouths.

Scott said The Gym Group themselves have not received much backlash – and that most people are excited about the new arrival.

He added: "I've only heard grief from tenants just because of the builders and the 24-hour gym – but we've done tons of sound proofing and we've also given them free memberships.

"Otherwise, everybody seems pretty buzzing about it!"

If you're swithering over whether to join up,  the gym membership will initially be available for a fiver a month in a limited edition deal, before increasing to £13.99 – and there's "no contract to tie you down" either. Find out more on their website.
