Budget 2021: Fuel duty 'to be frozen' for tenth year in a row

Fuel duty is set to be frozen for the tenth year in a row in the Budget, it has been reported.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak is planning to maintain the hold on fuel taxes in Wednesday's speech, according to the Sun.

Boris Johnson is reported to have hinted at the move, saying: "I firmly believe that the economic recovery is going to be powered by white van man amongst others."

Fuel duty has stayed at around 58p a litre for a decade.

That has saved the average car driver a cumulative £1,200 each - but deprives the state of tens of billions of pounds.

Last year’s freeze alone left a hole in Treasury finances of more than half a billion pounds in each future year.

Reports claimed Mr Sunak had warned he would have to hike fuel duty by 5p per litre, but he later backed away from the idea.

Over the weekend, said he could not comment on tax policies ahead of a Budget, but hinted he backed a freeze or cut on beer.

He said: "I would like to be able to keep taxes low for people in general.

"I'm a conservative and I believe in that."

Earlier, Mr Johnson said he was confident the Budgetwould "build on everything we have done" to look after businesses and the public throughout the coronavirus crisis.

"I'm not going to anticipate what the Chancellor is going to say on Wednesday," the Prime Minister told reporters.

"But I am absolutely confident that it will be a Budget that builds on everything we have done to look after the businesses and the people of this country throughout the pandemic.

"But that also paves the way for a strong, jobs-led recovery. That's what our focus is going to be on."
