Budget 2020 Ireland: Pensioners unlikely to receive cash boost in Budget 2020 as Government focuses on struggling families

Pensioners are not expected to receive a €5 boost in tomorrow's Budget as the Government focuses attention on helping families who are struggling with the cost of living.

Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe will unveil the 2020 Budget on Tuesday afternoon and has indicated that it will reflect the likely scenario of a hard Brexit.

Despite this the Finance Minister says that there will be no supplementary Budget in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

The Irish Independent reports that Mr Donohoe will reveal a series of measures 'aimed at reducing expenses' for cash-strapped parents.

The same paper claims that a number of next year's measures will not come into affect until after the General Election in May.

Free GP care for under-eights and free dental treatment for under-sixes are not expected to be rolled out until September 2020.

It is reported that increased subsidies for childcare are not expected until November of next year.

Low income families with teenagers who receive the Qualified Child Allowance will see an increase on the current rate of €37 a week.

Elsewhere, the Help-to-Buy scheme will be extended for another year.

There is also plans to increase the €1,500 tax credit given to couples where one parent stays at home to care for a child.

Meanwhile, there will be discussions today to decide if a 50c hike will be added to the price of cigarettes.

It is not expected that a increase for alcohol will be introduced due to concerns about smuggling after Brexit.
