Treasury Chief Secretary Liz Truss sat in Sajid Javid's lap in a squash for frontbench seats in the Commons for the Budget.

Ms Truss was in a feisty mood on Monday, sitting on the Home Secretary's lap in protest when no-one would move up for her ahead of Philip Hammond's speech on Monday afternoon.

The South West Norfolk MP seemed defeated after failing to squeeze next to Mr Javid and walked away.

But she was quickly beckoned back when the Prime Minister intervened to tell ministers to budge up and make space.

A pleased Ms Truss duly sat down a few places from her boss.

Ms Truss later appeared to struggle in an interview with Andrew Neil and Laura Kuenssberg on BBC2.

In an interview filled with awkward pauses, Ms Truss repeatedly gave evasive answers to questions about the impact of the Budget, Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) projections and how Brexit might affect the UK’s fiscal strategy.

When Mr Neil stated that the transition period might be more than two years, Ms Truss responded with a long pause.

Seemingly struggling for words, she eventually said: "I think it’s very important that we leave the EU in time.”

When the interview came to end, Ms Kuenssberg told her “you can escape now”.
