Budding beauticians can now learn their trade in Wardley

A bid to set up a beauty school in a Gateshead suburb has been given the stamp of approval despite a councillor's parking fears.

Gateshead Council's planning and development committee unanimously voted to give Tracey Carver permission to turn a former balloon and party supplies shop into a beauty school on Wednesday.

Ms Carver and her business partner will be working from the premises on Keir Hardie Avenue, in Wardley, running three courses per week, building up to five courses per week over the next 12 months.

Authority planners recommended approval for the application saying it is "acceptable".

But, ward councillor Ian Patterson raised concerns about the plans because he is fearful about parking.

Coun Patterson is a member of the planning committee but gave up his voting rights so he could speak against the scheme.

He said: "The road is chocka on the left and on the right. The number 57 bus runs along that road and there was an emergency call out, because of parking on both sides of the road the bus couldn't get round the bend."

Ms Carver said she expects most of her students to travel to her new training centre by public transport.

"If any parking was required there is quite a bit of room at the back of the units, we wouldn't be asking people to park on the street," she said.

"We promote local bus links and the Metro as well."
