TAMPA, Fla. — Bucs veteran backup quarterback Ryan Griffin, last seen keeping a staggering Tom Brady upright following the team’s celebratory boat parade, has re-signed with the club.
Terms weren’t disclosed, but Griffin played for a $945,000 base salary in 2020, according to spotrac.com. Tuesday’s announcement formally gives Tampa Bay a second quarterback under contract for 2021; Griffin and fellow backup Blaine Gabbert became unrestricted free agents in March.
Griffin, 31, was claimed by the Bucs off waivers from New Orleans before the start of the 2015 season and has remained with the team since, re-signing three times. During that stretch, he has appeared in only two games (both in 2019), completing 2 of 4 passes for 18 yards.
He was inactive for all 16 regular-season and four postseason games in 2020, but played more extensively than anyone the previous two preseasons. In eight preseason contests in 2018 and 2019, Griffin passed for 1,262 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions, with a 99.9 passer rating.
