Bucs' goal-line stand clinches win at Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. _ The Bucs held Cam Newton and the Panthers out of the end zone all night, denying Christian McCaffrey's last lunge short of a first down on fourth-and-inches from the Bucs 1 to clinch a 20-14 victory in Charlotte.

Tampa Bay held Carolina without touchdown despite nine trips into the Bucs red zone. The Bucs defense has allowed one touchdown in eight quarters in 2019, rebounding from a turnover-plagued 31-17 loss last week to San Francisco to even its record at 1-1.

Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston finished 16 of 25 passing for 208 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions while ending a streak of 12 straight road losses. However, the Bucs surrendered an average of 30 points in those 12 losses.

Rookie kicker Matt Gay atoned for an earlier miss with a 32-yard field goal with 2:26 remaining to give the Bucs' a 20-14 lead.
