TAMPA, Fla. _ The Bucs drafted their fourth defensive back in the last two years with their second-round pick on Friday, selecting Central Michigan cornerback Sean Bunting with the 39th overall selection.
Just one cornerback was selected in the draft's first round on Thursday, but the run on cornerbacks began in the second round as Bunting was one of four corners taken in the round's first eight picks.
None of those picks were LSU cornerback Greedy Williams, who was projected to be a first-round selection but hadn't been selected 12 picks into the second round.
Though he went to a mid-major school at Central Michigan, his cover ability is top notch. He was one of four draft-eligible cornerbacks to not allow a passing touchdown in 2018.
The Bucs want their cornerbacks to press more in the team's new 3-4 defensive scheme, and Bunting fits that profile. The 6-foot, 195-pound redshirt junior logged 37 tackles, including three for a loss, two interceptions, two forced fumbles in 12 games (11 starts) with the Chippewas last season.
The Bucs currently have Wharton High and University of Florida product Vernon Hargreaves and second-year player Carlton Davis slated to be the team's starting cornerbacks. M.J. Stewart, another 2018 draftee along with Davis, is currently atop the depth chart at nickel back.
Bunting, who emerged from a player with no Division-I offers on national signing day to become a first-team All-MAC selection last season, will compete with that group for playing time.
