Buckle up: belts are back. These are the 3 styles to invest in pronto

The 2000s was a decade that went big on belts.

From Christina Aguilera’s favourite studded leather disc belts slung over boho maxi skirts, to elastic sequin belts over boot cut jeans, punky studded black leather belts (so loved by Avril Lavigne), belly dancer chain belts and tasselled suede belts, a noughties outfit wasn’t complete without a low slung strap of some kind.

Then, sometime around 2007, belts fell into fashion oblivion. Gone. Vamoose.

And other than the fairly MAJOR collective obsession with the (desperately) unimaginative Gucci logo belt that took off in 2017 and didn’t wane until late 2018 (Lyst reported it was searched for over half a million times that year), fashion’s belt loops have gone largely unencumbered for the best part of a decade.

Until now that is.

This summer, belts are back in a big way… read on for the styles to know

The 90s rhinestone

This 90s classic has been reborn. And few are doing it better than British belt brand Black & Brown, whose luxey rhinestone 'Katie' belt (below) sold out of every size within weeks when it dropped on Net-a-Porter and was restocked twice. Net-a-Porter are now stocking a pastel-coloured version of the belt for summer, but the original's still available to buy on Black & Brown's website.

Keep the look elegant by pairing this waistline bling with unexpected materials – either cinching the waist on garden party-ready floral silk dresses or knotted over granny cardigans.

Shop the look:

Katie Crystal belt, Black & Brown, £325. Shop it here
Dayna Crystal Belt, £270, Black & Brown. Shop it here
Diamante belt, £29, Urban Outfitters. Shop it here
Jerry Belt, £115, Grlfrnd. Shop it here

The goldie looking chain

Chain belts are jangling their way back onto the sartorial agenda this summer - in fact, shopping app LiketoKnow.it has seen searches for 'chain belts' increase 2900% since November.

Much like its diamante sister, the gold chain belt looks best when paired with unexpected ensembles. Sling over suiting or structured formal dresses for an outfit that packs a punch.

Shop the look:

Coin multi chain waist and hip belt, £22, ASOS Design. Shop it here
Gold chain belt, £24, Topshop. Shop it here
Tanya Starfish-Embellished Chain Belt, £150, RIXO. Shop it here

Not only do big buckle belts ooze seventies sexiness, but they have the added bonus of making tired ensembles and dowdy dresses look instantly powerful and pulled together. Opt for clashing colours and unashamedly big buckles.

Shop the look:

Simone oversized canvas and tortoiseshell acrylic belt, £54 (was £90),Cult Gaia. Shop it here
Darcy brass buckle wide patent belt, £90, Black & Brown. Shop it here
