Buckfast brat attacked his own mum because she refused to buy him booze

A thug lost the plot and attacked his mother because she wouldn't pay for his Buckfast .

Daniel Coughlin, 21, flipped out when mum Angela refused to buy him the tonic wine or give him alcohol when the family was having with dinner.

Coughlin grabbed his mum and struggled with her, causing both of them to fall to the ground.

He then pushed her to the floor and began straddling her, until his father came into the living room and separated them, before phoning police.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard he pleaded guilty to assaulting his mother and behaving in a threatening or abusive way by shouting, swearing and acting aggressively, at the family home in Cyprus Avenue, Johnstone , in April 5 last year.

His sentence had been deferred for good behaviour and he appeared before Sheriff James Spy this week.

Defence agent Rhona Lynch asked the sheriff to consider granting Coughlin an absolute discharge, meaning he has admitted the offence, but it would not be counted as a conviction on the first offender’s criminal record.

She said: “Sentence had been deferred for good behaviour after he pleaded guilty to the charges.

“Subsequently, he has received a police warning for possession of cannabis.

“The offence was committed against the background of an adverse childhood and the experiences he suffered as a result of that.

“This is very much water under the bridge.

“He has sought counselling in dealing with past issues and has contacted RAMH in arranging that.”

The lawyer urged the court to leave an absolute discharge on the table as a conviction would impact his future and affect his chances of finding a job.

Sheriff Spy said he was prepared to continue the case for four months, “so he can show me he can keep himself out of trouble”.

He told him: “I will continue this case so that you can undertake the counselling you are about to embark on.”

Coughlin will learn his fate on May 21.
