Buckeye Battle Cry series: Best Ohio State football player to wear jersey No. 6

We’ve been going through a series of debating which Ohio State football player is the best to wear specific jersey numbers, and we’re up to jersey No. 6.

Here’s where we stand with all the jersey numbers we’ve debated to date:

Jersey No. 1 | Jersey No. 2 | Jersey No. 3 | Jersey No. 4Jersey No. 5

We’re doing this because we know you’re bored looking at every square inch of your home. We’re all getting a little stir crazy from being cooped up due to the measures put in place to help mitigate the spread of the coronavirus, and there are only so many classic games I can dial-up and watch.

In the long, illustrious history of Ohio State football, there is sure to be some disagreement, but that only makes it more fun. We might just sling some mud at each other, but it’s all being done virtually like everything else.

We will continue to go as high as makes sense, or until we win an all-expenses-paid trip to the grocery store to get toilet paper.

Mark, is going to kick us off again …

No. 6 – tough to pick, but I’m going with Sam Hubbard.

Hubbard was outstanding in his tenure at Ohio State, but played his entire career in the shadows of the Bosa brothers. While Joey and Nick got most of the spotlight, Sam was holding his own on Saturday afternoons.

Hubbard was named to the 2015 Freshman All-American team as well as being named a captain as a junior in 2017.

Hubbard made the most of what he had. He may not have been as physically gifted as some of his counterparts, but he made up for it with hustle and heart. One of the most defining moments of his career… sacking Trace McSorley in the 2017 come from behind game against Penn State.

Hubbard was a third-round draft pick in 2018 by the Cincinnati Bengals and has picked up in the Queen City right where he left off in Columbus.

Next … Brock’s take

Not a lot of options here, at least not of the all-timers variety. Typically when you think of a football number, No. 6 isn’t exactly a number players fight over.

But nonetheless, I’m going with Cie Grant because he was one of the most productive. He actually started his Buckeye career as a corner, but it didn’t quite work out. He made a decision to put some weight on and convert to being a linebacker.

Turned out to be the right decision as he racked up 71 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and four sacks.

Of course, his name is remembered for blitzing Ken Dorsey and forcing an incomplete pass to clinch the 2002 National Championship in double overtime. I still remember that play from when I was nine years old. Thank you Dad for letting me staying up and watch the game on a school night.

Agreed that this one is a little tougher, and we’re not picking from Buckeye Hall of Famers here, but I too am going to go with Sam Hubbard, though I get where Brock is going.

Hubbard was originally a lacrosse player committed to Notre Dame, but couldn’t resist the temptation to play for Ohio State when offered a football scholarship. He’s one of those guys out of Cincinnati that have made a name for themselves by coming to Ohio State. He left Columbus after finishing his career with a more than respectable 17 total sacks and 116 total tackles.

Hubbard’s stats won’t blow you away, but he was still productive enough to get drafted in the third round and be a key rotational defensive end for the Cincinnati Bengals, and is still doing it to this day. In fact, Hubbards’ 14.5 sacks so far in his career lead all defensive players selected in the 2018 NFL Draft.
