Buckeye baseball wins again, takes series from Purdue

Things might be coming together at the right time for the Ohio State baseball team. Mired in a four-team race for positions seven through ten — of which only eight make the Big Ten Tournament — the Buckeyes are starting to string wins together.

But it’s going to take more.

It took another one from Purdue Friday night 6-1 to win the first two games of arguably the most important series of the season with just one game left, and a spot in the conference tournament still on the line.

The star of the game was starting pitcher Seth Lonsway who went eight innings, giving up just one run on two hits while striking out fourteen batters en route to his seventh win of the season. It was an all-important one for the scarlet and gray’s postseason fate.

But it wasn’t all pitching.

Purdue got on the board in the bottom of the 1st inning on a wild pitch to score its only run of the game. Ohio State countered in the top of the 3rd with four runs, three of them on a three-run homer off the bat of Brent Todys to put OSU ahead 4-1.

The Buckeyes added two more runs in the top of the 4th inning for the final scoring of the game. As a part of that scoring, Dominic Canzone singled to extend his bases reached streak to an unbelievable fifty games — just one shy of Nick Swisher’s program record set back in 2002.

With the win, Ohio State stays in the midst of all the chaos for that coveted eighth spot, but it unfortunately gained no ground thanks to wins by both Maryland and Northwestern.

The Buckeyes must win tomorrow and hope that all the tie-breaker scenarios go their way if it comes down to it.
