Buckeye baseball drops close one to Texas A&M Corpus Christi

The Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders have a knack for ruining Ohio State baseball’s day in late drama. For the second time in two days, the Buckeyes held the lead late, but a rally turned potential victory into despair, in a 3-2 loss.

It was a game where neither team could get a lot going offensively. Ohio State got on the board first in the top of the fifth on Zach Dezenzo’s first career home run to make it 1-0. And it looked like it would be enough to hold up for the majority of the game.

Until the bottom of the eighth that is.

The Islanders got their first tun after a pickoff attempt went awry with a runners on first and third. They scored two more in the inning on a ground out and sacrifice fly to lead late 3-1.

The Buckeyes tried to rally in the ninth, scoring one run on a two-out RBI infield single by Brady Cherry to cut the lead to 3-2. But with the two outs and two on, Ohio State couldn’t complete the deal.

With the loss, Ohio State’s record drops to 5-3 and will have a four-game series in Daytona Beach against Bethune-Cookman next weekend.
