Buchanan Galleries demolition plan takes huge step forward as design team named

Plans to move forward with the demolition of Buchanan Galleries have taken a major step forward as the design team is appointed.

The £825m plan to demolish the current Buchanan Street shopping centre would see a new urban quarter being built in its place.

Announced in January 2022, the aspiration for the city centre location is to replace the existing centre with a new mixed-use neighbourhood, blending shopping with places to work, live and play.

Landsec has now announced the appointment of a design team to progress the redevelopment masterplan.

Foster + Partners will collaborate with Scottish firms Michael Laird Architects and New Practice to bring forward the plans for the area. They will be supported by the Glasgow offices of sustainability and engineering experts, Atelier Ten and Arup.

Nick Davis, Senior Development Director at Landsec: “We are delighted to have appointed a world class design team that will work with city stakeholders and citizens to bring forward designs that support the city’s net zero ambitions, creates a new and vibrant district, and extend the city’s iconic and accessible grid layout.”

A Proposal Application Notice has been submitted to Glasgow City Council to progress the consultation period, which will allow New Practice to formally launch the consultation programme today.

Local residents and city stakeholders were invited to register their interest via the Commonplace platform here.
