A second person has died from the bubonic plague in just a matter of days from the same region.
The victim died from multiple organ failure on Friday in China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, health officials have said.
The area where the patient lived in Bayannao'er, or Bayannur, has been sealed off as a result to prevent an outbreak.
Seven close contacts of the victim were placed under medical observation, but all tested negative for the plague and showed no symptoms.
The death comes just days after another person died from the plague, known as the 'Black Death'.
The death was reported in Baotou City in Inner Mongolia on Sunday, with health officials confirming the person died from the plague on Thursday.
The patient died of circulatory system failure, according to the the Baotou Municipal Health Commission. It did not mention how the patient had caught the disease.
Chinese officials quickly sealed off Suji Xincun village, where the patient lived, to contain the outbreak.
All villagers have so far tested negative for the disease, and all homes were disinfected, officials added.
Nine close contacts and 26 secondary contacts of the patient have been quarantined and tested negative, the commission said.
As a result, Damao Banner, the district where the village is located, has been put on Level 3 alert for plague prevention until the end of the year.
Baotou authorities warned of a risk of "a human plague epidemic spreading in the city," and urged the public to take extra precautions and seek immediate medical attention if they develop symptoms of fever or coughing.
Earlier this year, a 15-year-old boy also died from the disease.
The boy contracted it in Mongolia and dozens of people who contacted him were put into isolation over the deadly disease.
The unnamed teenager had a high fever after eating marmot meat with two friends.
He died three days after eating the rodent meat, according to reports.
The bubonic plague is a bacterial disease spread by fleas living on wild rodents like marmots.
It kills in less than 24 hours if not treated promptly.
Up to 200 million people were killed by the Black Death - bubonic plague - in the 14th century.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), anywhere from 1,000 to 2,000 people get the plague every year.
In China, 31 cases of plague were reported between 2009 and 2019, including 12 deaths, according to data released by the National Health Commission.
