"Bubbly and caring" teenager found hanged in halls in first year at university

Tributes have been paid to a "beautiful and precious" university student after she was found dead in her halls in a suspected suicide.

Keana Dippenaar, 18, was tragically found in her bedroom by her friends in halls at the University of Southampton in Hampshire.

The bright teenager was in her first year at the Russell Group university where she had been studying psychology .

Now tributes have flooded in from Keana's friends and more than £1,300 has been raised to help her family with funeral costs.

An inquest opened into Keana's death on December 9 heard the teenager, originally from Southend in Essex, died from hanging.

Her devastated mother, Carlene, described Keana as her "beautiful, precious and most-loved daughter".

She also said: "She was the most gorgeous, bubbly, friendly, compassionate and caring daughter.

"She loved [Korean pop music] K-pop and Korean pop culture. Keana loved to read and she always wanted to write a book.

"She got on very well with her two brothers."

Keana was found at the university's Richard Newitt Court student halls in Southampton.

She had previously written a note which said: "Remember you are better, smarter and more beautiful than you give yourself credit for. Love yourself."

Her friends have now rallied together to set up a GoFundMe page to help the Dippenaar family with funeral costs.

So far, they have raised more than £1,300 out of their £5,000 target.

A statement on the page, set up by Isaac Hand and 11 others, claimed Keana committed suicide.

It said: "Unfortunately a close friend of many and one of our flatmates, Keana, took her life.

"Keana cared so much about everyone she met and put a smile on everyone's face whenever she was around.

"Even though we didn't know her for too long she made a huge impact on everyone and was a big part of our flat.

"We want to support her family with any donations in order to give Keana the funeral or memorial that she deserves."

Posting on its website, Westcliff High School for Girls - Keana's former school in Southend - said: "It is with sadness that we have been informed of the sad passing of Keana Dippenaar.

"Keana was a 6th Form student who left WHSG in July this year, to study Psychology at Southampton University.

"Our thoughts are with her family at this very sad time."

One friend said: "Will always remember your beautiful big smile."

Another added: "Keana was a friend of mine from Westcliff High School for Girls. It was a pleasure to have known her. May she rest in peace."

A full inquest into Keana's death will take place in June.
