PATIALA: A third-year BTech student in Punjabi University was stabbed to death with sharp-edged weapons by unidentified accused, including some students from his department, in broad daylight on Monday.

The incident took place inside the university campus at 12.10pm near the University College of Engineering (UCOE) department.

The deceased — identified as Navjot Singh (22) — hailed from Sangatpura village in Punjab's Patiala district.

The police have initiated a probe. The case was being registered at Urban estate Patiala police station.

The police said that the accused included also those from the same engineering department and some of them were even younger to the deceased.

The university authorities claimed that Navjot was pursuing BTech in sixth semester and during clashes between the students he got serious injuries following which he was first rushed to university’s health center but was later taken to government Rajindra Hospital, Patiala where he succumbed to the injuries.

The university officials submitted the CCTV footage to the police.

The SHO said, "Navjot Singh succumbed to his injuries following excessive bleeding. He was stabbed a number of times including in the stomach. We have initiated the probe and are checking the CCTV footage."
