BT Sport make on-air Raheem Sterling gaffe in post-match FA Cup final interview

Raheem Sterling was incorrectly told he was the scorer of the first FA Cup final hat-trick since 1953 in an embarrassing on-air gaffe.

There was plenty of discussion surrounding Manchester City's second goal, with Sterling slamming the ball into the back of the net as Gabriel Jesus' effort crossed the line.

Sterling went on to score a second-half brace meaning the goal would have seen him credited with just the fourth FA Cup final hat-trick in history.

He appeared on BT Sport for a pitchside interview as City players celebrated on the pitch after the game - and he was told he had been given the goal despite this not being the case.

Raheem Sterling's response to question of whether he scored FA Cup final hat-trick

Presenter Jake Humphrey said: "First of all I've got a bit of news for you.

"The goal Jesus scored has been given to you so you have an FA Cup final hat-trick, the first one since 1953."

But it turns out he was given incorrect information. The goal has officially been given to Gabriel Jesus after being checked and as a result, Sterling will not enter the record books as the scorer of an FA Cup final hat-trick.

"You're bantering me," Sterling responded. "You're bantering me?

"I didn't mean to do it," he joked.

It was nonetheless a memorable afternoon for Sterling as City completed a domestic treble - and he hailed the little things Pep Guardiola has done to bring the best out of him and his side.

Sterling said: "The first thing when we came in from the World Cup for pre-season was mentality, straight on it again to try and retain the Premier League.

"I think keeping me on my toes. A lot of times I was playing and never really had competition, but every summer he's come in and added another player in my position.

"It's made me be on holiday and think it's going to be another tough season. It's made me continually work harder and prove myself."
