BT pundits deliver VAR verdict after Olympiacos defender escaped red card in Arsenal clash

BT Sport pundits John Hartson and Martin Keown are adamant that Olympiacos centre-back Ousseynou Ba should have been sent off against Arsenal.

With 20 minutes on the clock in the second leg of the Europa League round of 32 tie, Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe was sent through the middle by Alexandre Lacazette only to be hauled down on the edge of the penalty area by Ba.

The 24-year-old did not win the ball and hacked Pepe down, denying the Ivory Coast international a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

Arsenal's players and supporters were adamant that Ba should have been shown a red card, a viewpoint that was matched by Hartson and Keown, with the former baffled as to why VAR did not intervene.

Arteta believes Aubameyang doesn't need titles to be considered world-class

Asked if Ba should have been sent off for the challenge, Hartson told BT Sport : "I believe so. I think Ba comes across and takes him out. I think it is wild and rash from Ba.

"He wins none of the ball, takes the man and is denying Pepe of a perfectly good goal-scoring opportunity and I think Ba has got to go there. Why VAR has not got involved in this one I do not know.

"But for me, that is a red card."

Alongside Hartson was former Gunners defender Keown, and he also believes that Ba should have been given his marching orders.

Keown said: "I think if that was me, I would have expected to go at that point, as he is through on goal, Pepe.

"It was one of the few moments that Arsenal created anything in the first half."
