BT moves 1.3million customers onto new plan - adding £54 a year to bills

BT is moving 1.3 million landline customers to its Unlimited Minutes plan, adding £4.50 a month to their costs - working out at £54 a year.

The telecoms giant said it is writing to people now about the move, with the change scheduled for September 1.

The new deal offers unlimited landline and mobile calls at any time for £15 a month, rather than £10.50.

However, BT calculates the average person will only pay £1.83 more a month after the switch as a result of the savings they will make on call charges.

BT said it was making the change to better fit with how people use their phones now.

“The new calling plans will give customers more simplicity and flexibility over the calls they make. Fully inclusive packages provide customers with financial peace of mind that doesn’t limit their need to stay connected to family and friends," a spokeswoman for the firm told Mirror Money.

BT now has just three call plans for landlines (PA)

The Unlimited Minutes plan was launched in October 2019, and costs £15 a month.

BT said that if you don't think it's the right plan for you, or want to pay the extra monthly cost, you can move to a different BT plan or even quit them entirely without being charged an exit fee.

To move penalty-free you have to let them know your plans within 30 days of receiving the letter telling you about the change.

Customers who have been identified as vulnerable and have a fixed voice service with BT, but no broadband, will not be migrated.

"If a customer is unhappy with the new package, we have other options available to replace their outdated plan, such as our Limited Minutes Plan, which includes 700 minutes to call UK mobile and landline numbers for a total of £7 a month or they can opt out for no cost,” the BT spokeswoman said.

BT's current landline call plans are:

  • Pay as you go - Calls to UK landlines and UK mobiles cost 20p a minute, day or night
  • 700 minutes - Get 700 minutes a month to make calls to any UK landline number or UK mobile, day or night -  £7 a month
  • Unlimited minutes -  Unlimited calls to UK landline number or UK mobile, day or night - £15 a month
