BT is down - network crashes leaving frustrated customers unable to access internet

It's one of the most popular internet providers across the UK, but it appears that BT is experiencing issues this morning.

According to Down Detector, the issues started at around 08:24 BST, and are affecting customers in Edinburgh.

While the reason for the outage remains unclear, of those who reported problems, 60% said they couldn't access the internet, 35% were struggling with their emails, and 3% said they were having phone issues.

Speaking to Mirror Online, BT confirmed that the issues are affecting customers in Edinburgh, following a storm last night.

A spokesperson said: "Severe storms and flooding in Edinburgh last night damaged some broadband equipment in our exchange buildings. As a result, some customers in Edinburgh and a small number of other locations in Scotland may be unable to connect to the internet.

"Engineers are doing everything they can to restore any affected customers as soon as possible. Due to the extent of the damage, we expect engineers to complete their work in the exchanges later today (Wednesday) – at which point we’ll be able to assess any further related impact. Most phone and mobile services are not affected and we’re very sorry for any inconvenience.”

Several frustrated BT customers have taken to Twitter to discuss this morning's outage.

One user wrote: "Day 13 without internet. No update or correspondence in the last 48 hours. Nothing like getting ghosted by your internet provider."

Another added: "Woke up with no internet at all again. This is becoming a joke, 3 engineers who all leave saying it is fixed and it is now broken again. I'm going to lose my job at this rate!"

And one said: "Decided as it’s been mad hot in the UK to sleep during the day & work at night as it’s cooler. Just as I start working, boom, internet goes down. Thanks BT Appreciate it... Now I’m sitting here not able to do anything. You best get this sorted sharpish!!"

This isn't the first time that BT has experienced network issues in recent weeks.

At the end of last month, BT customers in Newcastle experienced internet issues due to a fire at a local site.
