BT customers in Edinburgh targeted by fraudsters in new phone scam

Fraudsters have been targeting people in Edinburgh posing as BT, the telecommunications company.

An Edinburgh resident shared the "scam alert" in a local Facebook page after she received an automated call from a person claiming to be from BT.

The caller said that her Internet was going to be disconnected as people were hacking into accounts in the area, asking that she dial 9 to resolve the issue.

After hanging up she called BT who confirmed the caller had been a scammer, the company say they will "never call to tell you your broadband has been hacked".

On their website, BT advise: "Fraudsters are known to make calls claiming to work for BT, when it's actually a scam.

"They may ask you for personal information, want access to your computer and in some cases, ask for your bank details. Don't be fooled, this is fraud."
