Bryson DeChambeau confident of emerging triumphant at US PGA Championship

Bryson DeChambeau reckons Harding Park is “pretty straightforward” before he bids to use his extra 40 pounds of muscle to lift the Wanamaker Trophy.

The world No.7 leads the PGA Tour in driving distance with an average of 324.4 yards off the tee.

The municipal course in San Francisco – named after the 29th US President in 1925 - will host a Major championship for the first time at the US PGA on Thursday.

The layout is a 7,234-yard par 70 with two par 5s playing more than 560 yards while the par-3 No.8 measures a brutal 251 yards.

But the winner of the Rocket Mortgage Classic averages , the star of the PGA Tour since the re-start, feels Harding Park can be overpowered.

“I think this golf course suits a bomber if you can hit it straight,” said DeChambeau.

“It is pretty straightforward to be honest with you. There is not really too much to it if you can just keep it on the fairway out here this week.

I don't feel there is a better time to win my first Major. I am just going to do my absolute best out there – I am not going to try and hype myself up at all. I am going to treat this like another tournament for me.”

Sir Nick Faldo has told the best players in the world to “take your medicine” in the heavy rough.

And Ian Poulter posted a video on social media showing different lies in the long grass and said: “The rough is pretty patchy.

"It is not going to be easy. In some areas, it is going to be sitting fantastic. In other areas, it is juicy. They all lie great on the fairway! Tip of the day – keep it on the short stuff.”

But DeChambeau added: “As the rough stands right now, I think the risk is definitely worth the reward.

"I am going to get it up there as far as I can, hopefully wedging it close and making some putts this week.”
