Bryce Harper wins NL MVP, Cubs' Anthony Rizzo places fourth

Nov. 20--Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper was a unanimous selection as the National League Most Valuable Player.

Harper, 23, was named on all 30 ballots -- two from each of the 15 NL cities. Harper becomes the youngest unanimous NL MVP selection.

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt of the Diamondbacks was second, followed by Joey Votto of the Reds.

The MVP award was the only NL honor not given to a Cubs player, but the Cubs were well-represented in the voting. First baseman Anthony Rizzo finished fourth with three second-place votes on a point system awarded to the top 10 players.

Jake Arrieta, who won the NL Cy Young Award on Wednesday, received five second-place votes and finished sixth. Kris Bryant, the NL Rookie of the Year, placed 11th and received one third-place vote.

Toronto third baseman Josh Donaldson, who began his professional career in the Cubs' organization, received 23 first-place votes to win the American League MVP award.

Donaldson, 29, who was part of a six-player trade that sent him to the Oakland Athletics midway through the 2008 season in exchange for pitcher Rich Harden and reliever Chad Gaudin, finished ahead of outfielder Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels.

White Sox left-hander Chris Sale received one seventh-place vote and first baseman Jose Abreu received one eighth-place vote.
