Bryce Callahan will help Broncos’ defensive backs learn Vic Fangio’s system

Former Chicago Bears cornerback Bryce Callahan signed a three-year, $21 million contract with the Denver Broncos in March. The Broncos were Callahan’s No. 1 choice in free agency in large part because of his familiarity with coach Vic Fangio.

Before becoming Denver’s coach, Fangio served as the Bears’ defensive coordinator from 2015-2018 and Callahan spent the first four years of his career in the coach’s defensive scheme.

“I’ve been in this system for four years,” Callahan said after practice Tuesday. “I felt comfortable with it. I felt like I could come here and not start over. I could just get here and get rolling. That was the main thing.”

Every other cornerback on the Broncos’ roster will be learning a new system so having a player like Callahan to lean on is valuable.

“I feel like that’s one thing I can bring to the defense is kind of knowledge just being there for four years,” Callahan said. “I can kind of help some guys out and make it easier for them.”

Callahan, 27, totaled 45 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions in 13 games with Chicago last season. He seems poised to have a big role in Denver’s defense under Fangio.
