As Jon Dennis points out in his four star review of Avonmore, Bryan Ferry is a master of covers. This latest collection from the Roxy Music man sees him tackle reworkings of Robert Palmer’s Johnny and Mary and Stephen Sondheim’s Send In The Clowns.
But there are originals, too, cast in Ferry’s familiar smooth lounge-pop style with a little help from his impressive supporting cast: Johnny Marr, Nile Rodgers, Flea and Ronnie Spector are among the collaborators here. Songs like Lost go big on atmosphere and emotion, showcasing Ferry at his best.
