Bryan Adams has been dubbed a “racist” after blaming “bat-eating, wet-market animal-selling, virus-making greedy bastards” for the coronavirus.
The Canadian singer/songwriter wrote, in a since-deleted tweet, that he was meant to be kicking off a series of gigs on 11 May, but that the Covid-19 pandemic had ruined his plans.
“Tonight was supposed to be the beginning of a tenancy of gigs at the @royalalberthall, but thanks to some f***ing bat-eating, wet-market animal-selling, virus-making greedy bastards, the whole world is now on hold, not to mention the thousands that have suffered or died from this virus.”
Adams also used the message to promote veganism.
“My message to them other than ‘thanks a f***ing lot’ is go vegan.”
Adams received flack for his message, which remains on his Instagram in its entirety, albeit with the comments turned off.
“Well after this stupidity I am really glad you got cancelled,” wrote one follower. “Hope this tweet and subsequent screenshots follow you to all your future venues.”
“I can’t say I was a huge @bryanadams fan ever to begin with... but dude you gotta go with your racist ass,” wrote another.
Others were surprised by the incident.
“Did not have Bryan Adams tweets racist bulls*** as a 2020 moment, but here is it. Right before our very eyes,” wrote one tweet.
Another added: “Anybody have ‘bryan adams racist meltdown’ in the 2020-is-a-hot-mess pool”.
Adams has yet to comment on the controversy, but has pledged to publish a live snippet of each song that would have been on his Royal Albert Hall setlist to his Instagram over the coming weeks.
