Bryan Adams says the loss of his father last year and his mother’s illness were the inspiration behind his new single.

The Summer Of ‘69 star’s father passed away at the same time as his mother was gravely ill. His single, Shine A Light, was co-written with Ed Sheeran and is a tribute to them both.

Adams, 59, told A List: “The song title just sounded like a good idea for what I wanted to say. I was told both of them were going to go last summer. Both my parents went into hospital at the same time, and I thought, ‘What would be an uplifting tribute to your parents?’

“I like the idea of it not being a macabre send-off. They are my parents and I like the idea of them shining a light on the world.”

On his friendship with Sheeran he said: “I was playing in Dublin on a Friday night and Ed was playing on the Saturday so I went along to see him. We got talking after the show and got along great, and I just said, ‘Hey, do you want to help me finish this song?’ He is an extraordinary talent.”

Adams, 69, was a long-time resident of Chelsea but has been living in New York for the last few years to work on the music for Broadway musical Pretty Woman.

He confirmed it is coming to London in 2020 and is looking forward to relocating back to the capital, He said: “I moved away from London a while ago and have been living in New York as I have been working a lot on the show.

“It will be coming to London in 2020 so I’ll be moving back and I can’t wait. I love London - I’ve always been able to walk around there without getting recognised.”
