Brute held knife to his sister's throat

A thug who held a knife to his sister’s throat in a horror attack has been caged for three years.

Robert Ryan had only just rekindled his relationship with his sister, Jennifer Ryan, when he unleashed a frenzied assault won her in October last year.

He seized her by the neck, pinned her to wall and repeatedly punched and kicked her.

At Paisley Sheriff Court, Ryan also admitted brandishing a knife at Govan police office.

The 28-year-old pleaded guilty to severely injuring his sibling in the attack at Glennifer Court, Paisley, on October 24 last year.

He admitted pushing her, causing her to fall to the floor and holding a knife to her throat.

He then seized her by the neck, pinned her to the wall and punched her on the head, again causing her to fall to the floor. While lying there, he repeatedly punched her and kicked her on her head and body, all to her severe injury.

He further pled guilty to causing fear and alarm at Govan police office on the same date when he held up a knife.

He shouted, swore and acted in an aggressive manner, both at the police office and enroute to the Helen Street building.

The defence agent acting on behalf of Ryan said: “He accepts his conduct was very serious on this occasion and I think he also recognises he needs to modify his behaviour in the future.

“He deeply regrets the harm he caused to his sister, particularly as they only recently reestablished contact with each other.”

Passing sentence, Sheriff James Spy said Ryan had a record of previous convictions for violence, stating he had also breached community-based orders in the past.

“The assault on your sister was a bad one,” he added.

Ryan - currently an inmate at Low Moss Prison in Bishopbriggs - was sentenced to three years, backdated to October 25 when he was remanded in custody.

He was also placed on a 12-month post supervision order and told to complete any anger management courses and drug counselling sessions as directed by his supervising officer.
