Brute behind bars for terrorising ex with letters and phone calls for years

A man has been jailed for a campaign of harassment against his former partner.

Thomas McTavish bombarded the woman with letters, phone calls and in person - despite being ordered by a court to leave her alone.

The 46-year-old was banged up for three years today at Hamilton Sheriff Court after admitting breaching the non-harassment order multiple times over a 21 month period between November 2016 and August 2018.

Detective Inspector Gary Irvine from Lanarkshire's domestic abuse unit said the Bellshill man's sentence serves as a message to others.

He said: "McTavish was sentenced for a number of domestic abuse related offences in November 2011 and a five year non-harassment order was imposed in order to protect his ex-partner.

"He broke the terms of this order by repeatedly contacting his ex-partner by telephone and letter, turning up at her home which understandably caused her significant fear and alarm.

"His conviction and sentence gives a clear message that domestic abuse will not be tolerated and we hope it will encourage other victims of abuse to come forward to police where they will be listened to and any report thoroughly investigated."
