'Brutal fire and rehire practice must be outlawed - workers deserve better'

Thousands of British workers are threatened with being fired and rehired on worse pay and conditions to do the same job.

And it's not dodgy backstreet companies doing this, it’s the biggest names on our high street.

Argos, Tesco and Sainsbury’s are all at it. From your morning Weetabix and coffee to your kids' school shoes, fire and rehire is everywhere.

Many of these household names have made billions during lockdown but greedy bosses want even more - and it’s the workers who have to pay.

British Gas and Clarks are other businesses forcing families into poverty with no regard for loyalty or years of service.

I’ve travelled the country and met workers who have given their lives to companies. Now they can’t pay their rent, go on holiday or sleep because of worry.

This is the human cost of telling a worker, your pay is cut, you’ll work longer hours and your pension is under threat.

Barry Gardiner MP has brought a Private Members Bill to stop the practice of fire and rehire (Sky)

Fire and rehire is just plain wrong and the Government says it agrees. Tory toff Jacob Rees-Mogg told MPs that fire and rehire was “bad practice” and no respectable employer would do it.

Even the Prime Minister says it’s unacceptable. So, Boris, why are you not supporting my Bill to outlaw this evil practice?

The Tory minister says he will “issue guidelines”. That won’t protect anyone.

My Bill will offer sensible rules that companies must follow. It won’t stop struggling firms restructuring or changing outdated practices. But it will stop bad bosses sacking workers to avoid redundancy rules and other workers’ rights.

We are all fed up of Covid but we came together as nation to support each other.

I hope we can all stop fire and rehire and make Britain the best place to be employed.
