Brutal description of Sean Longstaff from Manchester United shows how far midfielder has fallen

Sean Longstaff is no longer on the radar of Manchester United.

The North West side were credited with an interest in the Newcastle United midfielder back in the summer of 2019 and again in the winter window just gone.

Reports claimed a price tag of £50 million for the 22-year-old was quoted but it is understood that Longstaff was not for sale.

A knee ligament injury last March ruled Longstaff out for the remainder of the 2019-20 season, and the North Shields lad has failed to recover the form which sparked initial interest from the Red Devils.

Now the Manchester Evening News reports that MUFC have moved on - labelling Longstaff "yesterday's news".

In an article looking at the club's 'midfield overhaul', Samuel Luckhurst writes: "The benchmark clubs in the Premier League have a pool of at least six reliable midfielders and United accept they are ‘short’, and unflatteringly described the area was populated by ‘bodies’ in October.

"Judging by the response from club suits to queries about Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff, he is yesterday’s news."

This claim will be welcomed by Toon fans who had been worried that the club could cash in.

Longstaff remains under contract until June 2022, with hope that a new deal can be agreed to tie the midfielder down futher.
