Brutal 6am street brawl as several injured with sharp weapons

Several men were injured by "sharp implements" in a mass street brawl in the early hours of today.

Police were called to Lord Street in Southport , near the Scarisbrick Hotel, at around 6.11am following reports of disorder involving a group of men and women.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said witnesses told officers that "sharp implements were used to inflict injuries to some of the men."

The force said the investigation is still at an early stage and the severity of the injuries are unclear.

There are a number of scenes cordoned off in the Lord Street area, whilst Crime Scene Investigators carry out forensic inquiries, and CCTV opportunities are being assessed.

"Extra officers will be on patrol to reassure local people and we are determined to being those responsible to justice.

"We know that a number of people and drivers were in the area at the time of the incident and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed what happened, or has any information which could help with our inquiries, to come forward."
