A sixth person has been arrested over suspected links to the Brussels bombings, adding to the five apprehended in raids on Friday.
A spokesman for the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office said the person was under arrest but did not give any further details pending an official announcement later on Saturday.
He said a suspect arrested earlier, and identified by authorities as Osama K, was Swedish, providing partial confirmation that the man was Osama Krayem from Malmö.
Magnus Ranstorp, a counterterrorism expert at the Swedish National Defence College, said Krayem had previously posted photos from Syria on social media.
On Friday, Mohamed Abrini was arrested in Belgium, along with four other people. Prosecutors said they were examining whether Abrini was the “man in the hat” who fled Brussels airport after two accomplices blew themselves up, killing 16 people.
A total of 32 people died in coordinated attacks on Zaventem airport and the city’s metro on 22 March.
The two airport bombers have been identified as Ibrahim el-Bakraoui and Najim Laachraoui, who is believed to have made the explosives used in the attacks.
Bakraoui’s brother Khalid blew himself up at Maalbeek metro station, close to the EU headquarters in Brussels.
Abrini, 31, had been on Europe’s most wanted list since being identified as one of two suspects seen on CCTV travelling in a car two days before the Paris terror attacks in November. He was driving the Renault Clio that was later used by a team of gunmen in the atrocity.
Abrini was arrested in Anderlecht, the district adjacent to Molenbeek, which has become known for its links to jihadism.
Two other suspects were detained at the same time as Abrini, and two further arrests were made in an undisclosed location in the Belgian capital.
