Bruno Guimaraes' Newcastle frustrations leave Eddie Howe facing £80m Brazilian headache

Eddie Howe admits he has a major selection headache involving his £80million boys from Brazil.

Newcastle's record £40m signing Joelinton, brought in as a striker, has made himself undroppable with his powerful, athletic midfield performances sniffing out danger.

And Howe also now has £40m Selecao international Bruno Guimaraes desperate for game time, and a first start, after signing from Lyon in January.

Howe sees the pair as a Brazilian double act who will play together this season.

But with Joe Willock back in good form and Jonjo Shelvey having his best games for the club, that is on hold.

The Newcastle boss is reluctant to change the “good flow” of his winning team, and conceded it is the first time in a while there are genuinely difficult decisions to make.

Playmaker Guimaraes has been asked to stay patient, with Howe saying: “I am keen to see Bruno like everyone else is. It has to be at the right time and when the team needs him.

"Bruno will start a lot of games for this football club, and this season, and be a huge player.

"In the last two games I have not wanted to change the team too much, we’ve had a good flow.

"Bruno in training has shown what he is. This period when he is watching and learning is not a bad thing.

"He will be frustrated because he wants to show everyone his talent but there are lots of games on the fixture list ahead.

"These are the selection headaches I want. You want a squad fighting each other.

"You have good players waiting to get in and that is the culture you want, and I’ve not had that enough with the squad stretched with injuries.

"There is real competition now to get into the team."

Howe has praised Joelinton for turning his game around, from being a tame centre-forward to a midfield enforcer.

He added: "Defensively he has added a lot to the team - regaining second balls, his ability to recover long distances, intercepting, have all been at the highest level. I can’t praise him enough.

"I know there is more to come. The first time I was aware of his tactical awareness was against Norwich and we were a man down and went 4-3-2, that was with minimal tactical instruction. Then we worked with him on the training ground."

Skipper Jamal Lascelles is fit again, but may have to wait with Dan Burn excellent on his debut last weekend.

Howe is keen for new striker Chris Wood to get a goal but praised his defensive work.

"He would love to score. For me the most important thing is that he is helping the team. He makes defenders, sometimes both, compete with him, distract them from other players.

"His delivery of our tactical play, if the No9 doesn’t deliver it, the whole thing breaks down and he has been excellent in that respect."
